Xylophone Cookies

Vayav's mom recently contacted us with a new design request. For his birthday, the theme was xylophones, and she asked if we could include 5 keys with each one personalized to spell out his name. The cake was to have a xylophone on top and she planned to lay these cookies out around the base of the cake as favors. What a fun theme! We really enjoyed making these cookies and Vayav's parents were such a pleasure to work with.

When we were contacted by Susan to make cookies for her daughter Zoe's 2nd birthday party, we were excited to create a new design. The theme was based on the movie The Incredibles so Susan sent us ideas for an Incredibles logo cookie, as well as a personalized "POP!" "WHAM!" type of design that would say "ZOE!" instead. So we thought - why not do both!

We love creating new designs for our clients and are very excited to add these to our collection!

Go-Im DIY

After Lila's Dol was featured in Hostess with the Mostess back in February, we’ve received quite a few inquiries on how to make Angie’s go-ims [candy pillars]. So we've put together this post with all the how-to information in one place.

There are a variety of materials used to make the different go-ims. You can always find alternative ways to make them so don’t fret if you are missing one or two of the items. We made two different types - 1) mentos and 2) rice puffs / red beans, but have listed some alternate suggestions below.

Materials

· Paper Towel Roll

· 8.5 x 11" printer paper

· Hot glue gun

· Mentos

· Rice puffs

· Red beans

Go-im bases

The go-im bases are rolls of paper towels covered them with plain printer paper

· One piece of paper is a design template for the Korean characters and mouse. This way, the sizing is consistent in characters and outlines

· The puffs/candies will be glued directly onto the paper

· I freehand glued on the Mentos from top to bottom in the stripes a

nd floral pattern. They fit in together just like a jigsaw puzzle.

Note: If you want to keep the go-ims for posterity, you'll probably never get to use the paper towels underneath.

As an alternative, you can buy cardboard cylinders from Home Depot or other supply stores, but the paper towels are just something easy and probably already in your home.

Gluing the puffs/candy

· Everything needs to be glued on with a hot glue gun because it won't stick with any other glue.

· Elmers is too wet and will soak through the rice puffs & paper. Glue stick is too weak to hold the heavy candies.

Rice Puffs & Red Beans

"Chook/Dol", "Sora" and "Mouse" Go-ims

· First glue on the red beans along the outline and Korean characters

· To fill in the characters and outlining, I used Korean rice puffs which look like little rice krispies. (You can find these at any Korean supermarket)

· For the mouse nose, I used a pink Mentos cut in half. (You can also use a pink jelly bean or other little pink candy)

· Template - print image scale to 8.5 x 11 paper

I must mention that these go-ims took a very long time because the little rice puffs are so tiny. However, I prefer the way the rice puffs look. Several people have borrowed my go-im with the rice puffs afterwards so I feel like the time put in was well worth it.

As an alternative to the rice puffs, you can use black and white goya beans. If you are short on time, this is a better option because they take up more surface area.

Candy go-ims

· To keep a consistent look in the colors, only Mentos were used and the design was varied to 1 flower go-im and 1 striped go-im

· Mentos come in different packets at the store. For this occasion, I used the berry mixes, plain white and green apple.

· Be sure to use only the chewy mint candy (NOT gum) because the Mentos gum has a different shape and is not as smooth and round like the mints.

· We glued the Mentos on freehand, but you can draw out stripes and flowers on the printer paper as a guideline.

As an alternative to the Mentos, you can use gumballs since you may not find all the colors you want in the Mentos packs. For a boy, I have used all blue, yellow, white and green gumballs in the past.

Also, we'd like to mention that while we used paper towels, you can make go-ims in different heights. So if you want to make a shorter one, you can use a cylinder container (example - peanut container or roll of toilet tissue). This would add a nice variety to the go-ims.

Last month, I had the pleasure of co-hosting Sandy & Albert's baby shower. It was all blue, orange, brown themed with adorable baby animals. We incorporated DIY elements such as a diaper cake, cupcake stand with coordinated cupcake wrappers, onesie clothesline, kids favor boxes, candy bar, and of course Meli & Angi cookie favors.

These cookies were made for a traditional Korean first birthday (DOL). Each set of cookies says "chook/dol" (first birthday) or "lila/1". Each set was placed in a clear plastic case and cushioned with white tissue shred. All colors matched the party theme of pinks, white and lime green.

Meggan's Bridal Shower

We love it when our customers send us feedback, but it is doubly rewarding to get photos of the event as well. In this post, we'd like to highlight an order of favors for Meggan's bridal shower which took place in Indianapolis, IN.

First, a photo of the soon-to-be newlyweds. What a lovely couple!

Melissa, one of the bridesmaids, arranged to have cookies personalized with each guest's name, as well as "bride" hearts. We also included sets of X&O favors, which were all laid out for guests to enjoy.

We were so pleased to create these carriage cookies for Baby Kim's shower. The invitation included an image of a blue and brown carriage so it was a perfect fit. We used light blue, darker blue and brown. To personalize the cookies, we added a playful "k" monogram on each carriage. Jane's Baby Shower

When we first spoke to Jenny about cookie favors for her cousin Jane's shower, we immediately thought - What a sweet gal, sounds like this will be a really fun baby shower.

Unfortunately, sometimes bad things happen to nice people. After the shower, we found out that the cab driver who dropped Jenny off at the venue, drove off/stole ALL the favors, her DSLR camera and all the decorations/baby items she had placed in the trunk of the taxi. Needless to say, we were beyond shocked that something like this happened.

Although the shower went on as planned, Jenny threw a second baby shower for Jane a week later. This time, with all the cookie favors and decorations she originally wanted to use (see below).

We wanted to kick off our return to blogging with these butterfly birthday favors. Half of the cookies were made with a simple line motif while the other half were personalized with the guests' names. We were asked to use a mix of boy/girl colors, and love the way they turned out. It reminds us of a festive spring-time bouquet.

Last year, we were honored to bake cookies for Anna & Wayne's baby shower. It's incredible to think that a year has passed already, but last week, their dear baby Clark celebrated his first birthday. Being that Wayne is a big fan of comic books & superheros, the party invitation had a Superman theme. When asked for cookie ideas, we suggested these custom superman style cookies, but with a personalized twist.

We substituted the S with C on every cookie so instead of Superman, it would be SuperClark. Each cookie was iced with the iconic red and yellow colors, and then packaged with blue ribbon.

We had a lot of fun making these cookies. Not only do we enjoy seeing new designs come to life, but knowing how happy Anna, Wayne and their guests were with their favors is the best reward.

We recently created these custom teddy bear cookies for a baby shower with a story book theme. The host used "ABC" throughout the shower planning to stand for "April Baby Coming" and requested that each bear be personalized that way. We really liked the way each one came out looking so friendly and cuddly! Since the guest of honor is having a baby boy, we used a pale blue color to accent the ears and for the "ABC," and packaged each cookie with a pale blue ribbon to match.

Red Egg Cookie Favors

In Chinese culture, a newborn's 30th day is celebrated with a "Red Egg & Ginger" dinner. It's like a coming out party for the baby since infant mortality rates were high back in the day, so reaching 30 days meant the baby would survive.

The color red represents good fortune & happiness, while the egg is a symbol of fertility. The ginger represents the mother who during her postpartum healing eats foods cooked with ginger. The dinner is also a time for the mother to come back out in the social world since traditionally, she's been at home healing for 30 days.

For Lila's Red Egg dinner, Meli & Angi made these "Red Egg" cookies for all the guests. We used 3 different types of writing on the eggs for variation. They were a hit with all the guests...definitely more of a treat than the actual red-dyed eggs that were given out ;)

We are always up for customizing cookies or coming up with new designs! So for Alison's bridal shower, her bridesmaid Jina wanted to keep the floral motif of the cherry blossom cookies but make sure that every detail had the bride in mind. For her shower favors, we did 2 simple branches with "alison" written in the center. We were very pleased with the way they turned out.

Martha Show Recap

We're back from the taping of the Martha Stewart Show! Eileen and I were so excited to be there and we even left with some great goodies too!

First...what a beautiful set! Here's a picture of the kitchen section. What a dream...especially to us! We would looove to have a working kitchen like this. Sure, it's for filming, but everything works and it's so well lit, open and organized!

Here's Martha with one of the guests Eddie Ross (and friend). He's also a contestant on Top Design 2, and I remember him doing well on the last episode which isn't surprising considering he is an editor at Martha Stewart!

We don't have a picture but celeb blogger Perez Hilton was a guest. He looked great and was really funny too. Other guests included Margaret Roach who has a new gardening blog, A Way to Garden, and Matt from food blog mattbites.com.

Matt and Martha baked these delicious looking alfajores (Dulce de Leche) cookies. For the recipe, click here. We'll definitely have to try these sometime!

As for the other audience goodies, we got the Cute Overload page a day calendar, the book A Year of Mornings, created by 2 friends who were 3191 miles apart, AND everyone also got a new HP Photosmart All in One wireless printer!

Martha Stewart Show!

This past weekend was my baby shower and I must thank Eileen for not only helping to plan such a memorable event, but for making this amazing cake:

Each mini cake was in the shape of a toy building block and spelled out Baby Tomato since that's the nickname that we've given the baby. Not only were they so cute and impressive, but they tasted delicious as well! In fact, a number of guests tried to convince us to add these to the Meli & Angi product line....hm....

Two personalized heart cookies were placed atop shredded brown tissue paper and enclosed within a clear plastic case. New Button Designs

We love button cookies! Maybe it's because they're small and bite-sized, or because you get a lot of them at once, but they're definitely some of our favorites to bake and decorate.

Inspired by recent baby showers that we've attended, Meli & Angi is now offering new button cookie designs with little lambs, stars, dots and name personalization. At 1.5 inches in diameter, we think they're great snacks for both adults and children alike.

Cherry Blossoms

When our friend Ginny got married two years ago, I remember thinking how much I liked her choice of reception flowers (above photo). Each table was set with a cylindrical vase full of cherry blossom branches. It was simple, elegant, and looked beautiful whether taking in a panoramic view of the whole reception site or just one table setting.

So when we were recently asked to create an engagement gift set, I couldn't help but think about somehow including a cherry blossom motif. The result was a pink and white themed set that includes the below scalloped circles with cherry blossom branches running throughout the cookie matched with 3 personalized hearts, LOVE and dotted wedding cake cookies, and a dozen assorted buttons.

Pizza Date with Meli

This past weekend, we went to Brooklyn to take care of some upcoming orders. On our way back, we stopped by Roberta's, a new pizzeria in Brooklyn, that just got a great review in The NY Times. Meli really enjoyed watching them prepare the pizzas in the oven and discovered a love of basil. A yummy time was had by all as we ended a day of errands with a delicious lunch and wonderful, extremely friendly service.

Babies, babies, babies everywhere!

Okay...maybe we're just more sensitive to it since we have little Meli to occupy us every day, but still, we love reading about celeb baby bumps, hearing about our friends that are expecting or those who have welcomed a new one into their lives. There's just something about babies that makes you want to smile, not to mention all the super cute gifts on the baby market.

Besides the usual gifts like baby clothes and toys, we also love this modern bottle drying rack by Skip*Hop. Well designed and functional!

Let's face it, by the time our kids are in college, it's going to be way more expensive than when we were there. These white glazed ceramic piggy banks from Pottery Barn Kids may not hold a college tuition, but it's never too early to teach baby good saving habits!

We also put together a Meli & Angi baby set that we think would make a great gift when going to visit new parents. Moms-to-be who might've been watching their sugar intake during pregnancy might enjoy indulging in a sugar or ginger cookie here and there. Our giftset includes: 3 personalized onesies, 3 baby bottles and 1 dozen "button" cookies with assorted heart and initial designs.

Baby Clark

Last month, we participated in a baby shower for Anna and Wayne, who are expecting a baby boy sometime in March. When we returned from our trip, we heard that Baby Clark may be arriving any day now! Needless to say, we are so ecstatic for the expectant parents-to-be.

For their shower, we made star-shaped sugar cookies and "button" ginger cookies (Wayne's favorite flavor). All cookies were decorated with assorted hearts, dots and "C" designs in honor of Baby Clark, with all icing that matched the color themes of the event.

Congratulations to Anna, Wayne and both your families! Thank you for letting us be a part of welcoming Baby Clark to your lives.

....and we're back!

We all had such a fun time on our vacation to the Bahamas. Meli especially loved playing in the sand and building castles. She had a scratch on her nose so she's wearing a Nemo bandaid in this picture that matches her blue bikini. Isn't she cute!

I'd have to say the most fun was had at Great Stirrup Cay, when Eileen, Meli and I all got to relax on the big float while Jae and Yong pushed us out in the ocean. It took us almost all day to convince Meli to get on. And good thing we did! Even days after we returned, Meli still recalls the fun she had on the "tube" while eating her box of raisins.

And now that we're back and recharged, we're ready to get baking and blogging so please check back for more updates!

Gone Fishin'

Meli & Angi will be on vacation from 02.23 through 03.31. We're taking our annual cruise together on Norwegian Cruise Lines to the Bahamas for a week. We'll be sure to post lots of pictures of Meli when we're back!

Noelle's First Birthday

In December, we were asked to make favors for Noelle's dol - Korean first birthday celebration. The theme was a princess party, so Noelle's mother and Aunt Sabrina ordered 80 "Jillian" tiaras with pink and green dots. We are so pleased to have been a part of such a wonderful event.

From Illustration to Icing

For the past 2 weeks, we've been busy working on new cookie designs for the Meli & Angi website. We usually start with several illustrations, and since one of our pet peeves is wasting icing, we try to narrow down our favorites as much as possible. After selecting a design, we'll vary color combinations like the carriage cookies below that were recently added to our baby page.

The pastel colored "Buttons" on the right side of this photo are also new to our cookie menu. At 1.5" in diameter, we think they are the perfect size for snacking. They're also available without any icing for those who prefer to eat just the cookie itself. We've been told by our taste testers that they're yummie either way. They're definitely one of our favorites to ice.

Meli recently celebrated her 2nd birthday with a big party at the World Trade Art Gallery. Eileen went all out and baked a beautiful Elmo cake and prepared the best goodie bags we've ever seen, complete with hand-sewn hairpins for all the girls. There was even a visit from Elmo himself! Happy birthday Meli!
